Superintendent's Message
As we close out another calendar year, I’m reminded of how fortunate we are in Citrus County to have a public-school system where every child is known, supported, and given opportunities to succeed. Public education is the heartbeat of this community, and our schools—built on the belief that Every Path Begins Here—continue to prove that a strong public-school system is not only vital, but irreplaceable.
Last month, we celebrated one of our district’s most inspiring traditions: the Galaxy of Stars event, hosted by the Citrus County Education Foundation. This night reminds us why public education matters. Galaxy of Stars shines a spotlight on the teachers and support professionals whose work changes the trajectory of students’ lives every single day. It was my honor to announce this year’s district winners.
Michelle Cleary, a dedicated 3rd grade teacher at Hernando Elementary School, was named our 2027 Teacher of the Year. Her classroom is a place where expectations are high, curiosity is encouraged, and students thrive. Over the years, three of her students have earned perfect scores on the state math assessment—an extraordinary reflection of her commitment to excellence.
We also celebrated Linnet Calise, Career Advisor at Withlacoochee Technical College, as our 2026 School-Related Employee of the Year. For 24 years, Mrs. Calise has been a mentor and guide for countless students. She leads with compassion, professionalism, and a deep belief in the power of career education.
Their stories represent the hundreds of educators and support staff across Citrus County Schools who make a difference in ways the community may never see—but our students will never forget.
The Power of Public Education
Events like Galaxy of Stars underscore something essential: public-school education offers opportunities that no other system can provide, for every child, at no cost.
This year, Citrus County Schools achieved a 92% graduation rate, one of the highest in our region. Behind each of those diplomas is a team of adults—teachers, bus drivers, classroom aides, secretaries, food service workers, and custodians—who refused to give up on a child.
Our district continues to lead in Career and Technical Education, offering 155 CTE courses and access to over 70 industry certifications. Nearly half of our high school students—more than 3,900—are enrolled in a CTE pathway this year. These programs give students real-world skills, hands-on training, and a jump-start into high-demand careers. Few school systems in our state can match the depth and variety of options we offer right here at home.
Our seniors also benefit from the extraordinary generosity of our community. Each year, local businesses, civic groups, and families award hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarships to Citrus County graduates. These investments open doors to college, trade school, and specialized post-secondary training.
And we remain deeply proud of the young men and women who choose to serve our nation by joining the United States Armed Forces. Their courage reminds us that public schools do more than prepare students academically—we prepare them for citizenship, leadership, and service.
Our Community Makes The Difference
The Galaxy of Stars event also highlighted the powerful partnership between our schools and our community. Thanks to the Education Foundation and generous sponsors—including Jenkins Auto Group, Suncoast Credit Union, JMGibson Mechanical, Coke Florida, and many others—every nominee received recognition and generous gifts. Their partnership reinforces a simple truth: when a community invests in its public schools, the entire community thrives.
Looking Ahead
As we enter this Christmas season, I want to express my deep appreciation to our families, staff, and community partners. Your commitment ensures that Citrus County students have access to world-class opportunities, right here in their hometown.
Our public schools are more than buildings. They are places where dreams begin, futures take shape, and every child is given a chance—not based on what they can afford, but on the belief that they deserve the very best education possible.
Thank you for your support of Citrus County Schools. I look forward to all we will accomplish together in the year ahead.
In Citrus County, Every Path Begins Here—and every future is bright!
